Bio-interactive Architecture

Exploration of Lichen ecology to inform a bio-integrated architecture through facades and lifestyles.

Lichen Entanglement Study

The drawing is a demonstration of entanglements found in lichen ecology. It is developed as a part of study to understand various symbiotic interactions. The drawing identifies 5 parameters that make lichens symbiotic and resilient. Their various interactions through initiation, metabolic, reproductive and end of life when put on the interactions map, help visualize their degree of symbiosis in their ecosystem.
The drawing is an adaptation of Biological interactions developed by Edward Haskell. This outlines the various degrees of interactions/ impacts possible between architecture and natural elements.

Architectural Interactions Chart

The workflow chart demonstrates the rigorous process in drawing links between biological potentials and architectural issues. The chart can be read in three sections: Biological Potential, Architectural issues and Interpretations. This is an archetypal outline towards any bio-integration endeavor.

The chart was developed to map interactions between architectural and natural elements at specific phases through their respective lifecycles. The chart studies interactions specifically at Construction, operations and end of life phases and culminates a resultant in the fourth quadrant describing the nature of interactions individual phase may have with the natural environment.

Narratives

Lichen Narratiles - a comic themed narratives developed for giving the subject feeling of being light but advocating the underlying serious issues as well. The narratives depict a family of fish that describe amongst themselves the impact their environment is experiencing between bio-integrated V/s Non integrated architectural environments.
